Spain: Good Galia melon campaign expected in Murcia
For Merca-Altiplano, the Galia melon harvest will officially begin in about 15 days, and it will be then when they will really have control on prices in the export market. "For now, we can only say that they are reaching between 0.60 and 0.70 Euro per kilo at origin," explains José Antonio Fernández, commercial director at Merca-Altiplano. For the time being, everything is going smoothly; the flowers have set well and the weather has been favourable. "Nothing makes us think that the campaign will be different to last year's," explains Fernández.
The average production volume which Merca-Altiplano handles ranges from 7 to 8 million kilos, 100% of which go to foreign markets. "Central European countries are the ones with the biggest demand for this melon variety, followed by northern France and a part of England," states Fernández. As for what other producing countries are in the international market, Fernández mentions Israel and Turkey, although "they do not really give us competition; our only concern is the weather, which needs to be favourable to ensure the markets demand more of this product."
