China: Shorter season for Ningbo's bayberries
In the past few days, because of continuous rainfall and other elements, the harvest season has been slightly shorter in the red bayberry producing locations in Ningbo city (Zhejiang province). Since the red bayberries have hit the market, Ninbo has suffered from torrential rains. This has had a certain impact on the red bayberries originating from the producing locations there.
This year, the 'Chinese water chestnut', a kind of produced red bayberry, was largely picked on June 10th and several batches hit the market on the 13th. On the 20th of June the peak season kicked off. Many berry farmers predict that, due to several reasons, the harvesting season for red bayberries will be somewhat shorter this year. The typical kind of red bayberry from Xiangshan county, the dark purple bayberry, entered the market one week after the Chinese water chestnut berries, and will continue to be sold until the beginning of July. These berries have also suffered from heavy rainfall, and many dark purple bayberries have been lost. Almost 80% of the bayberries were impacted, so the number of high quality fruits has been severely reduced.
