Italy: Worrying aquifer situation in Puglia

The drought registered in northern Italy is now worrying the south as well. The table grape sector has had to use wells for weeks due to the lack of rain and high temperatures. "We hope the water will last long enough," reports a producer.

Table grape vineyards are suffering, especially the younger plants, grafts and vine shoots. Some varieties which are particularly sensitive to heat waves (e.g. Red Globe) present some signs of scalding.

"We're hoping a few summer storms will cool down temperatures and refill the aquifers though, at the same time, we're hoping to avoid the hailstorms that have been hitting northern Italy."
