Increasing demand for Spanish red grapes

Trends are shaped by the tastes of consumers and this has a direct impact on the products that growers intend to cultivate. Consequently, and given the requests of the processing sector, there has been a significant increase in the cultivation of seedless red grape varieties.

"About three quarters of our production consists of the Crimson variety," explains Fernando Morote, manager of Growers Fresh Hub. This Seville-based company has an annual production of grapes oscillating between 2,500 and 3,000 tonnes, of which 80% go to markets like the UK and Ireland.

The Spanish Crimson grape season has not started yet. "There are some from other origins, such as Egypt, although the fruit has arrived with a delay this year," explains Morote. That is why Spanish growers are taking their time to ship the grapes to the international market, because, "It is advisable to wait until the stocks of other origins, as well as of previous varieties, are exhausted in order to prevent the risk of oversupply," added the representative of Growers Fresh Hub.

Given the market trends, "We have high hopes in the new varieties that ITUM is introducing," affirms Morote, "Since there are very interesting red varieties underway." For now, only a group of growers are producing them and availability is limited. "With these new varieties, we hope to meet the required standards and cover a demand that has yet to be covered at an international level." concludes Morote.
