UK supermarkets selling giant strawberries

To meet Brits' insatiable appetite for strawberries, supermarkets are this week launching supersize "buckets" of strawberries.

Shoppers traipsing fruit aisles in Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and M&S will find giant packs of up to 1kg in size on offer, seemingly dwarfing regular 300g packs.

Asda's 700g punnet is going on sale on Saturday at £2.50 ,while Tesco's 1kg punnet is on special offer for £3.

At £7 M&S's 700g strawberry punnet is nearly three times the price of other stores, although it said the berries have been specially selected to be extra large, with the average strawberry exceeding the size of a hen's egg.

It comes as UK berry sales now equate to a fifth of total fruit consumption in the UK, overtaking apples and bananas. Strawberries, by far the most popular berry, are expected to account for more than half of all sales this year, reaching £564 million.
