Spain: Currant prices fall by over 50% in a week

"Last week, currants were marketed for 20-23 Euro per kilo, and this week the price has dropped to just 9 Euro," points out Nathalie Saiz of Lolifruit. This significant price drop is due to the low demand for currants in Europe. "This is an expensive product, whose demand is very small and is only used in confectionery, jams, juices, etc.," explains Saiz.

The representative of Lolifruit states that, in a good year, they can market at most about 20,000 kilos. Nevertheless, "this year has been disastrous for Portuguese currants (the origin that they are marketing at the moment), since Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands have had an increasingly larger production, and with thicker varieties," affirms Saiz. That is why Spain and Portugal, with much smaller varieties, are falling behind. Moreover, to this we must add that "many Portuguese producers don't yet have all the necessary certificates, like GlobalGAP, to be able to compete in the international field," explains Saiz. This makes it difficult to sell the production in other countries, due to the demands and standards set by the international market.
