Elena Buchloh, Kompany:

"Reasonable glasshouse strawberry season despite dip around Mother's Day"

Last year Kompany expanded their range to include strawberries. They are sourced from seven growers, with a total of 17.5 hectare of glasshouses, and 4.2 hectares of raised-bed strawberries. The supply of glasshouse strawberries from the spring season is as good as ever. "We are receiving our last pallet this week", says Elena Buchloh, who is responsible for strawberry sales at Kompany.

"Most people associate Kompany with cucumbers and autumn tomatoes, but now also with strawberries. The expansion into strawberries has gone very well and has been a good addition. Of course there is a learning curve n the first season, but this season has been satisfactory", says Elena. "Price-wise it has been a reasonable season, even if the market dropped around Mother's Day; but everyone had to deal with that."

From the beginning of week 25 the supply of raised-bed grown strawberries will start at Kompany. "Sales of our glasshouse strawberries are aimed mainly at the German market, but we are also interested in other countries." When asked if the expansion into strawberries could lead to an expansion of their other soft fruit range, Elena answered: "That is not on the cards at the moment, but it has not been ruled out."
