May orchard update
Washington cherry harvest starts this week
Warm weather is rolling into Central Washington as spring bloom comes to a close and summer harvest starts. Cherry season is near on the horizon with earlier harvest dates starting on June 10th. In the May Orchard Update, Dave Gleason, Chief Horticulturist, talks about the upcoming cherry harvest.
“The weather has been very good this year, the trees look great, foliage is beautiful and we are seeing fruit develop rapidly,” Gleason explains. Superfresh Growers® is expecting a high-quality crop of cherries this season that will extend into the last days of August. Dave continues, “With our current weather pattern, we expect a gentle and easy growing season.”
The crop continues to be about three weeks behind from last year, with cherries starting in the next week or so, followed by apricots beginning in early July.
