China: Cainiao's first shipping depot at the origin of lychees

Lychees are a very delicate fruit and can be easily bruised. Most of the time, Feizixiao lychees are shipped to the end customers by air. However, starting from 1st June, with the official opening of the first fresh produce shipping depot in Maoming, lychees transported from here to their destination by road will be fresher than those travelling by air.

"By combining the shipping depot with the cold chain transportation we can lower costs and shorten the journey time for lychees between different receiving stations. Also, Cainiao provides a one-stop cold chain transportation service for lychees from their origin. After the cooling, sorting and packaging processes, lychees are sent to the cold storage and soon delivered to over 130 cities in the country by refrigerated trucks. Consumers can enjoy the fresh taste of these lychees within 72 hours after they are picked," said Ms. Min Lu, a logistics expert from Cainiao. "Thanks to the cold chain transportation, only 3% of lychees will rot, which is 7% lower than shipping them by air. According to our actual measurement, the use of the Cainiao Shipping depot has helped the lychee growers increase their earnings by 30% compared to air transport."
