Spanish, Greek and Turkish watermelons are Italy's main competitors

"The prices of Italian watermelons are higher, so the Spanish, Greek and Turkish are competitors in our country," affirms Antonino Ardina, manager of the company Compagnia Internazionale Agroalimentare. The maximum price they obtained last year, both at the beginning of the season and at the end, was 1.20 Euro, and this year they have started at this same figure. "At the moment, two weeks from the start, the price paid per kilo stands at 0.80 Euro," explains Ardina. Both prices and the production volume of watermelons are stable in Italy.

Regarding exports, Ardina comments that "we sell all the production of our cooperating growers in Italy and we know that our customers export them to other countries in Europe." Countries like Germany, the Netherlands or France demand Italian watermelons "although we haven't got full control over where they go or the volumes shipped," clarifies Ardina.
