"Egypt: "Our main competitors in the grape market are European growers"

The lower cost in logistics, as well as the better quality and greater options in packaging, entail advantages for the grapes coming from Spain or Italy, against which Egypt is unable to compete. "We also have more restrictions on exporting to European countries, so the process slows down," explains Yara El-Sayad, head of business at All Fresh International.

This Egyptian company, which throughout the year grows four grape varieties, Flame seedless, Sugraone seedless, Red Globe and Autumn Royal, is currently marketing only the seedless ones. "Our annual production amounts to 600 tonnes, of which we export 100%," points out El-Sayad. Destinations such as the Far East, the UK and Spain have so far shown the most interest in Egyptian grapes. And, furthermore, "we are also planting this season for other European countries," states El-Sayad.

In a few days, exports will start and the representative of All Fresh International affirms that the FOB price will be 10 Euro per 5 kg box. This is a very similar price to that paid last year, as the average price of the Flame with seeds stood at 8.90 Euro for a 4.5 kg box EXW; that of a box of Red Globe, also 4.5 kg, reached 8.6 Euro. EXW; and the price of the same box of Autumn Royal cost 11.15 Euro.
