Poland: Stonefruit to be more expensive due to weather
As a result of the damage to fruit trees caused by spring frosts, there will be a sharp drop in the production of Polish apricots, peaches, sour cherries, cherries and plums, and fruit will be more expensive.
This forecast is based on an estimation of the level of fruit setting in all national fruit orchards. There are many orchards with very few or no buds, so the losses are huge.
According to estimates, this year's apricot and peach harvest may be as low as 5 percent of last year's harvest, while that of cherries may reach 10-20%, that of sour cherries 25-30% and that of plums just 35-45%.
Damage has been observed in the regions of Grójec-Tachkie, Biała Rawska and Lubelskie, i.e., the regions with the highest concentration of stonefruit trees.
It has also been recorded in lowland orchards in the Sandomierz region and in Nowy Sącz and Limanowa counties. On trees in higher places the fruit level is average. The same is true in the Kielce region.
The highest number of fruit buds in the trees of all stonefruit species is observed in the regions of Kujawy and Wielkopolska, and especially in Lower Silesia and Opole.
