According to Susi Bonet, of the sales team of the cooperative Cambayas, one of the largest producers and exporters of brebas and figs, "the cold wave that we suffered early in the spring caused a lot of fruit that was then growing in the trees to fall to the ground."
The volumes available are thus expected to be limited, and according to Susi Bonet, "although I don't think there will be shortages, this lower production will lead to prices remaining more stable compared to previous years, when prices have gradually fallen as more production hit the market."
In spite of this, Bonet affirms that "the quality is excellent this year, with a predominance of large calibres, which are the most demanded by the majority of customers."
"The United Kingdom also demands brebas from us, but they are more used to Turkish figs, which are smaller and have a smoother texture. Our brebas are fleshier, with a softer texture and a sweeter taste, and are harvested from the same tree that will yield figs in August. Another advantage is the absence of competition from other origins, such as Turkey, at this time."
