Export of Ecuador's mangoes to China only in starting phase

"The production season of Ecuador's mangoes starts annually in October and ends around January. Even though Ecuadorian mangoes were already admitted to China on 28 January 2016, the first batch was only exported in October 2016. Now they are still in the market exploration stage," according to Cui Wenjie, CEO of Xi'an Jinzhu Fruit Co Ltd.

Farmers sorting the freshly picked mangoes

"We work together with top-notch, large-scale suppliers of fresh fruit. From the excellent production sites you can directly purchase high quality mangoes. Through the port of Shanghai, the mangoes are sold to large-scale supermarkets, fruit chain stores and e-commerce platforms in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province. Last year, Ecuador exported 41,600 tons of mangoes to China. The price was on the high side then. This year's mangoes are not ripe yet, but we have already received orders from our customers."

"The Chinese consumers are not expected to buy the Ecuadorian mangoes very fast. The high transportation costs give distributors on second and third tier markets a rather high sales pressure. Apart from this, after the mangoes have arrived, they have to ripen more. This makes it very hard to get the best taste."

Large variety of mango products from Ecuador

"Even though they are faced with these problems, it will not take long for Ecuador's mangoes to be accepted by Chinese consumers. We have faith in the future development of the market. Ecuador's advantageous temperature, humidity and rather long rainy season guarantee the large variety of mangoes, the product quality, the fine appearance and the unique taste. Moreover, fruit is Ecuador's backbone industry. The government offers beneficial policies to help and improve legal safeguards."
