Romania: Exorbitant cherry prices this year

Romanian cherries will reach prices of up to 20 lei per kilo (about 4.40 Euro) due to the weak production this year, as more than 50% of the early fruits have been affected as a result of hail and cold, reports economica.net.

At this time, consumers can only find imported cherries on the market and prices range from 35 to 50 leu per kilogram (between 7.70 and 11 Euro).

According to data supplied by OIPA Legume Fructe, most of the new plantations that have been set up lately have been for the production of cherries, some of which are already yielding fruit. This reflects the good prospects that domestic producers have on the fruit.

Romanian cherries compete mostly against imports coming usually from Bulgaria, with prices up to 20% lower.
