Apple and pear stocks in the EU in March
As of 1 March 2017, there were a total of 2,832 million tonnes of apples in storage in the EU, compared with 2,908 million tonnes in the corresponding month of the previous year. At the same time, the stock of pears amounted to 409.8 thousand tonnes, compared to 458.8 thousand tonnes in March 2016, reports FAMMU/FAPA with data from the WAPA.
The greatest volume of apples in March was stored in Italian chambers (934,000 tonnes) and in Poland (799 thousand tonnes). Also, over 381 thousand tonnes were stored in France, 242.6 thousand tonnes in Germany tones and over 163 thousand tonnes in Spain.
Among the stored varieties, the most common were the Golden Delicious, with 936 thousand tonnes, the Idared, with almost 235.5 thousand tonnes, and the Jonagold, with more than 186 thousand tonnes and the Red Delicious and Gali, with about 120 thousand tonnes.
Meanwhile, the highest volume of pears was stored in the Netherlands, with 133.3 thousand tonnes; Belgium, with almost 112 thousand tonnes, and Italy, with 88.5 thousand tonnes.
The most common varieties were the Conference, with over 293 thousand tonnes, and the Abate Fetel, with over 56.6 thousand tonnes.
