"The unusually frosty April has caused serious damage to many strawberry farms," said Hans-Jörg Friedrich of the German Association of Fruit and Vegetables [Bundesvereinigung der Erzeugerorganisationen Obst und Gemüse] to the newspaper, "Welt am Sonntag".
As the paper reports, the harvest will begin around ten days later than expected and is also expected to be much poorer than the last. Farmers are increasingly trying to protect sensitive strawberry plants with tunnels and tents over the fields.
Regionally, the crop is expected to differ. In Rheinland-Palatinate 10 to 15 percent of the flowers were frozen, in Baden-Wurttemberg the figures are significantly higher.
