Ukraine's berry harvest normal despite bad weather

Earlier this week the first berries arrived in Ukrainian markets from a local grower. According to Info-Shuvar, Kherson region farms have started harvesting their greenhouse strawberries on Monday and according to the producers, despite unfavourable weather conditions and snowfall last week, the greenhouse strawberry harvest is progressing normally.

As of April 26, 2017, farmers are offering small amounts (200-500 kg) of strawberries at a price of 110-130 UAH/kg (3,79 - 4,48 EUR/kg) while the demand for berries is quite low because of the cost. Ukrainian strawberries today are actually offered at the same price as those imported from Spain.

"Production of early berries in Ukraine is so far developing mainly in the "summer" film greenhouses. It is for now too expensive to grow berries in the" winter" glass greenhouses, despite reduction in competition from imports,” commented Tetiana Hetman, head of Info- Shuvar.

Ukraine is the 7th largest producer of strawberries out of all European countries and each year Ukrainian farms harvest around 65-75K tons of berries. International trade is still low in Ukraine, held back by undeveloped infrastructure making it difficult to export the berries.
