Spain: First Jerte cherries hit the market

The president of the Association of Municipalities of Valle del Jerte, Ernesto Agudíez, stressed this Friday at a press conference that the first cherries of this area of the province of Cáceres "have started arriving at the cooperatives."

The start of the campaign arrived earlier than in previous years, when the harvest of Jerte cherries kicked off in mid-May, he added.

Moreover, he said the campaign is expected to be good, as the trees "are loaded with cherries" and the period between the bloom and the fruit's harvesting has been acceptable.

In any case, he recalled the weather recorded in March and April, when "it rained little and there was wind, which caused the trees to lose more water," so he explained that rains before the harvest would have been "good for the trees to gather strength during the campaign."

But for now the campaign is still "in the air, since its development will depend on the weather,", emphasises Agudíez, as, if the rain makes its appearance during the peak of the harvest, it would cause cracking and make the fruit unsuitable to be harvested," he added. The "worst scenario would be hail, as it would damage whole trees and would make their production impossible to sell," he concluded.
