Steady is the name of the raspberry game

Domestic and imported raspberry supplies are looking steady on volume right now. “We’re an organic produce wholesale distributor. We buy all our blackberries and raspberries from Driscoll’s,” says Tonya Quinn Haworth of the Portland, Oregon-based Organically Grown Company. “And the supply has been steady. We’re getting berries from both Mexico and Oxnard, Calif. and the volume is similar to last year. You might be surprised that it’s been so steady given all the weather fluctuations going on in both of those regions.”

Regular supply helps Organically Grown meet the demand, which tends to be equally steady for the delicate berry. “Raspberries tend to be in demand all the time—they’re not anything that comes on with great demand for a holiday or anything along those lines,” says Haworth. (Unlike strawberries for Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day for example.) “In the spring, people are looking for something fresh—so between tropicals and berries, we can keep something exciting on the shelves for consumers until stone fruit, melons and other summer fruit are on.” With steady supply and demand comes steady pricing as well.

Varietals of interest
And while the red raspberry reigns at Organically Grown, other varieties of raspberries are also of growing interest to consumers. “We do carry golden raspberries on occasion,” she says. People get excited about something new.”
