Ramón Sales, manager of Shakespeare Fruits

"Spain: "First loquat of the campaign will be exported on Monday"

It is still too early to know how many kilos they will produce this year and how many will be demanded. According to Ramón Sales, of Shakespeare Fruits, "we expect a smaller volume due to the hail and rains that the fields have suffered in recent months." Last year, they sold a total of 300,000 kilos, although prospects this year point to a smaller volume. The fact is that the loquats, after being struck against the branches by the wind and damaged by hail, have dark marks that make them less appealing; some are even spoiled. However, the rain has not been too much of a negative factor, since it has only caused the fruit calibres to grow.

Countries such as Saudi Arabia, France, Serbia, Romania, Sweden or Lithuania, among others, are the main markets where this fruit is shipped by Shakespeare Fruits. "Before the Russian veto, this country was one of our main customers. We used to ship full trucks that we must now redirect to other markets, like Saudi Arabia," explains Sales.

As for the average price with which the campaign has started, it stands at about 4 Euro per kilo, just like last year. "We estimate that it will then fall to an average of 1.60 Euro, which is what we get almost every year," adds Sales. This is a campaign that lasts for approximately two months, so prices fluctuate a lot for such a short period.
