Italy: Good prices for pears during the 2016/17 campaign

"It wasn't difficult to reach good prices for pears this year, as there was 20% less produce. We need to prove we are good in normal years too, though," reports Fabio Bergonzoni, director of Bergonzoni Frutta, a company located in Poggio Renatico e Bentivoglio collecting 11,000-13,000 tons from around 50 members.

"We mostly sell to Italian and foreign retailers. I believe we need to get along with the distribution sector and find a balance. While it's true that we cannot live without them, the opposite is also true, as consumers are paying increasing attention to what they eat and they want to eat Italian products. This is why domestic produce will be promoted more and more. I am an optimist and this is how I feel. On our part, we must produce fruit that tastes good and with a good shelf-life."

The cooperative is located in the largest pear production district in Europe, in the Ferrara, Bologna and Modena provinces. Quality was excellent in 2016, except for the waste caused by hailstorms, and shelf-life was good. There were no problems during destocking and prices were always good for producers. Gross saleable production was affected, though, as there was a 10-20% production drop.

"The average drop for our members was 13%. Those who managed to harvest 30 tons per hectares of Abate pears anyway saw good profits."

Bergonzoni produce reaches Canada, Germany, France and Slovenia. It used to be shipped to Libya too until a few years ago, but now business relationships have cooled down due to payment problems.

"Large chains are interested in supplying producers with high-quality Italian pears. We need to reach a balance, though, so as to maintain good prices even with bigger quantities."
