Michel Schrijnemaekers, Fruitveiling Zuid-Limburg:
"Stocks of Elstar rapidly decreasing, Jonagold remains a fighting market"
The top fruit market is relatively stable at the moment. "It's getting there," says director Michel Schrijnemaekers of Fruitveiling Zuid-Limburg. "There is a fair demand from the domestic market. Not extreme, but just good. There is also plenty of demand for export for pears. It has been okay for the Conference pears and the good Elstar so far. It's certainly a better year than last."
"The stocks of Elstar are decreasing quickly. This means there isn't much interest in exporting them, as this makes them too expensive. We see the opposite with Jonagold. Our eastern neighbours have had enough of them so it's a real fighting market," says Michel. "75 cents is being paid for the good sizes of Conference and Elstar. The good sizes of Jonagold are lucky to get 50 cents and that's definitely not enough."
The auction director doesn't expect it to get exciting on the top fruit market towards the end of the season. "It will loosen, the stocks are too small for that. The industry prices are relatively stable and I'm not afraid of the competition from overseas. The New Zealanders have been finding their way to Asia in recent years. More is paid for apples there."
