Interview with VI.P director Josef Wielander

"The market is not behaving the way we expected"

"The market is not behaving the way we expected, mainly because of the Russian ban and the partial inaccessibility of North African markets. The rest of Europe, Italy and Spain in particular, is responding well, so we will end this season before harvesting starts," explains Josef Wielander, general director of VI.P.

Josef Wielander, director of VI.P.

"We are still dealing with the negative consequences of the Russian ban, as we had to adapt to it and find alternative markets with no notice. In the meantime, we may be affected by it less and less, as it no longer seems it will be lifted soon. And even if things go back to the way they were, import rhythms will definitely not be as they used to be, especially considering the growth of the Russian domestic apple production."

"Destocking plans are continuing as expected. Profits will be lower compared to last year and to the five-year average, but stocks will nonetheless enable us to tackle the second and last part of the year with a certain calm."

As regards the Indian and Chinese markets, the director concluded: "bearing in mind the huge population of these two countries, of course we are very interested in them. Supplying China and India would change our sales behaviour completely."
