Macedonian apple exporter:

"We already had good relationships with Russia before the ban"

Macedonia has a history of exporting to Russia, which has continued since the Russian ban came into force. Not a lot has changed, but Ivan Kocev from exporter Agro Fruit admitted that they have benefited from the lost apple exports coming from other countries, like Poland.

“We have been exporting to Russia for a very long time now. The market has been very good to us and they give us good prices for our apples.” said Ivan.

Large investments from the Macedonian government have helped growers modernize and become more competitive in the global market.

The most popular apple varieties grown in Macedonia are Red Delicious, Idared and Golden Delicious. As well as growing the apples themselves, there are also a lot of Macedonian companies offering seedlings.

The new season doesn’t start until September/early October, so prices of the old stock are low, with an average price of €0.30 per kilo. Ivan said that prices are expected to rise to around €0.40-0.50 at the start of the new season.
