Washington Apple growers expect to bounce back from bad year in India

Washington Apples, which had a poor year of exports to India last year, is hopeful of making a comeback this year. A brand known worldwide for its variety and origin, Washington Apples has a share of 60 per cent in US apple production.

“The Washington Apple growers exported 5 million cartons in 2014-15. But this fell to 3 million cartons in 2015-16 because of increased demand in the US and also because of increased production in India. We are confident that the growers can reach the 5-million carton mark again this year,” said Keith Sunderlal, the India representative of the Washington Apple Commission.

Rebecca Lyons, International Marketing Director of Washington Apples, said the commission is targeting 25 countries to promote the brand. This includes the top importers of Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, China and India.
