China: Hainan wax apple in sharp cut

"Most wax apples on the Chinese market are from Taiwan and Hainan province, with a small amount originating from Guangdong and Fujian province, as well as Thailand and Vietnam. On Hainan, wax apples can be harvested twice a year. Cold air at the end of last and typhoons last summer, have led to weaker trees and delays in the bloom period. As a result, yield of the fruit's Spring harvest reduced about 50%. In addition, prices have increased by approximately 30% over the same period last year," explains Mrs.Feiyan Su, from the Qionghai Yu Jue Fruit Cooperatives.

"Our cooperatives is located in Qionghai city in Hainan province. We grow wax apples on 225 mu (15 hectaries). Our two main varieties are Leaf wax apples and Kingbox wax apple. The leaf wax apple can be supplied all year round, under normal circumstances. Listing period of the Lingbox wax apple starts at the beginning of November, untill the end of July.

Last year, affected by abnormal weather conditions, the listing period was postponed until the end of December, and the trees were very weak, which directly led to a substantial reduction in total production. So far, the weather is normal this year. As long as there is no extreme weather, both the output and the market price are expected to be relatively stable."

"Our wax apple are sold through on-line sellers and fruit stores to high-end supermarkets and fruit boutiques of first and second tier cities such as Ole, City 's Supershop. A small amount sold to the larger wholesale market."
