"This week there is more production and prices have fallen by between 10 and 15 percent," explains Freshuelva manager Rafael Domínguez, who points out that "bad weather in France has also taken a negative toll on consumption in this market, one of the most important for exporters in Huelva."
Temperatures have already fallen this week in the largest strawberry producing area in Spain, with averages of 18-19 degrees Celsius, and the weather forecast predicts rainfall, cloudy days and therefore fewer hours of sunshine. "Next week, we will have similar volumes to those achieved two weeks ago," he affirms.
March is a very important month for strawberry producers in Huelva, since they enjoy a significant presence in the European markets, completing 30% of their overall campaign, when the productions from other European countries, such as Italy, France, Germany or the Netherlands, are still low.
At the moment, all the varieties of the Fresas Nuevas Variedades program; that is, the Primoris, Rábida and Rociera, are in production. "The Rociera is this year's great revelation, already accounting for 15% of Huelva's strawberry production after its test year last season. Its quality has been remarkable and we believe that the acreage in Huelva will continue to grow," points out Rafael Domínguez.
