Up to now, only small shipments of strawberries have been sent by Spain, but that will soon change. “At the end of this week, or maybe the start of next week, larger volumes will be sent. And it was about time, because there is much demand. The market was very smooth right from the start, because there were never any excessive volumes. We would have liked more strawberries from the start, but we cannot complain about prices. One thing compensates the other,” says Dirk Heerman from Guido Fruit.
Boost in production
The reason that there was less supply in the first months of 2017 was the colder and wetter weather in Spain. “We had far less volume than in previous years. By now, the weather has improved, and much sun is also expected for this week. The coming ten days are looking good according to the forecast. This will result in a boost in production and supply.”
Higher price
Because of the lower production, prices were also higher than last year for a while. “We have had Spanish strawberries since January, and the price level was very high up till now, higher than in previous years.” The trader has been satisfied in general. “We also had very few problems as regards quality, despite the weather in Spain.
