Italy: Del Bello diversifies its markets after Russian ban

Del Bello Srl is a family business located in Casazza (BG) which has been commercialising fresh produce for four generations.

Apples are the company's core business. The fruit is supplied to domestic retailers every day. However, over the past few years, exports have become essential to tackle the ever-evolving market.

"After supplying the Russian market for a long time, the ban meant we had to start exporting worldwide. 80% of our turnover currently derives from foreign markets such as India, South America, Africa, Canada and the Middle East. Our main objective is to strengthen our business relationships and export our produce farther and farther away," explains owner Mirko Del Bello.

Del Bello Srl owns its own processing warehouse with apple packaging machines and cold-storage units. The fruit can be placed in single-layer cardboard crates, trays or bags, as well as 18-20 kg trypacks for exports. The varieties available are: Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Gala, Fuji, Granny Smith, Braeburn and others upon request.

The varieties available depend on the season, except for Golden Delicious, which is available all year round. Del Bello can also import foreign produce during the counter-seasonal period to meet client demands. Logistics is very important, therefore only reliable efficient forwarders are used. In 2007, the company obtained the UNI EN ISO22005:2008 certification for traceability.

"We have also started doing more towards social responsibility and have adopted the SA8000:2014 standard. This way, we can grow safer produce in compliance with current regulations. Adopting this standard means we can show our social commitment towards achieving a suitable working environment and working conditions."

In addition to being a modern efficient company, Del Bello is also socially aware and is an example that many should imitate.
