France: Lectoure Melon trademark approved

Thirty or so producers met last week to discuss Lectoure melons. The Association Promoting Lectoure Melons wants to set up a trademark, with the support of the producers. The Co-Presidents of the association explained how difficult and costly it is to set up a PGI (Protected Geographic Indication). However, the trademark is well underway. Producers selling under the brand Melon de Lectoure will have to use packaging exclusively made by the company Peret, and they will become members of the association, who are the only owners of the brand.

They will have a members card and be recorded at the Chamber of Agriculture. Only cardholders will be able to buy Lectoure Melon pallets. The production zone will be determined at the next meeting on the 23rd March. Organisers were pleased with the number of participants and the support from the town and the community at last week's meeting.
