Italy: Zincal ® nectarines in full bloom

Renowned for their excellent organoleptic qualities, Zincal® nectarines are sold by Compagnia delle Primizie Soc. Agr. Cons. Srl and cultivated in the Metaponto plain area with low-environmental impact techniques both in open fields and in a protected environment (greenhouse polytunnels and under anti-hail nets).

Yellow nectarines of the Zincal® series come from trees patented by Planasa (Plantas De Navarra S.A.) in Huelva - Spain through natural GMO-free crossbreeds. They are distributed in Italy by Planitalia and have a very attractive red to deep red colour. Grades depend on the variety, and therefore so does weight (100 to 200 grams). The shelf-life is rather long, the flesh is compact and sugar content hovers between the 10°Brix of Zincal® 3 and the 12 of Zincal® 20.

Despite being varieties that don't need very cold temperatures, and considering that this year there was a long period characterised by cold weather (snow and frost hit the Mediterranean area particularly hard in January), all nectarines which are part of the Zincal® series (Zincal® 3, Zincal® 8, Zincal® 9, Zincal® 17, Zincal®20) grown in Policoro and Rotondella, present abundant and homogeneous blossoming. It seems there is no frost damage.

Blossoming started around January 20th for Zincal® 9 (greenhouse polytunnel) and Zincal® 3 (anti-hail nets) and continued with Zincal® 8 on January 25th (open-field) followed by Zincal® 17 and Zincal® 20 in February.

The following setting and fruit development stages are looking good and harvesting should respect the typical ripening calendar for these varieties. The fruit will be distributed mainly on the domestic (85%) and European (15%) markets between late April and mid-June.

The fact that these varieties are early and because of their excellent organoleptic qualities, they are much appreciated by the market and by the most demanding consumers.

In addition to the excellent fruit characteristics, the accurate genetic research and the good adaptability of the plants to the Metaponto soil and weather conditions, the success of these nectarines is also due to the environmentally-friendly, specialised techniques implemented. There is only a limited use of phytosanitary products, instead the use of natural agents and insects make production more sustainable.
