Italy: The Hungarian market is good, but competition is tough
Kaiser pears, harvested in the region of Ferrara, Italy, are especially popular and appreciated in the Hungarian market. At present, companies like Maini Frutta S.R.L. have established themselves as the main suppliers in this market, and this is while facing tough competition from neighbouring countries, which are also large fruit and vegetable producers. "It is a market where you can ship many products, but always taking into account the proximity of other countries that cultivate the same varieties and their low production costs, in addition to the low price of transport, given their proximity," comments Nicola Maini, manager of Maini Frutta.
"This year, the market situation is good. Many parts of Italy have been hit by frost and low temperatures and this has resulted in the fruits in stock reaching high prices," explains Maini. Nevertheless, once these stocks have been exhausted, the Italian market has had to resort to importing pears from Africa and South America.
