Italy: Kiku's focus on sustainability

Sustainability was again the focus of KIKU Variety Management at the recent Fruit Logistica. The Crimson Snow Club met for the annual Crimson Snow Global Meeting. Discussions were around the many expressions of interest from all over the world, for both testings and commercial licenses.

But according to the group it is essential to find the right growing areas and most of all partners with the same visions and spirit of team players. The club analysed trends and tendencies for the next strategic steps. The European Crimson Snow partners are for Italy Gebr. Clementi and Bio Meran (South Tyrol), Rivoira Giovanni &figli (Piedmont), Sanifrutta (Piedmont), Iseppi for Switzerland and Verda Vivo/Argounija for Serbia, the gate to Russia.

The number of producers and hectares is steadily increasing, and in parallel the Crimson Snow partners are serving more clients in Europe, the Middle East and Far East. “This years production was 4.500 tons, the forecast for 2018 is 7.500 tons. We are planning to get to 600 hectares by 2020”, explains Jürgen Braun, CEO of Crimson Snow Branding.

Crimson Snow partners also gave their input on the variety: “The variety is very robust, easy to grow and environment friendly. The consumer loves the red color and the “snow-white” flesh. Another advantage is the long storage, indeed Crimson Snow is ideal for the second half of the season when other varieties are already sold or losing quality. In this period we have with Crimson Snow a locally produced apple in the market and we do not have to rely on imports from the southern hemisphere.”

Jürgen Braun adds: “An essential part is also promotion and comunication. On one hand we want to give consumers the chance to look behind the scenes, that’s why we put the growers in the spotlight. With the hashtag#happygrower we are telling their special stories and hobbies. On the other hand, athletes are very likeable and authentic ambassadors: again we want to tell special stories of very special athletes. For example the two skiers from Trentino “Jack &Fabry”, are the new world champions in the paralympic category “visually impaired”.

All these stories are simply "great feeling", the slogan we have invented for, accompanying Crimson Snow ambassadors’ stories. Watch out for them on our socials.”
