Prospects for currants, blackberries and gooseberries in Ukraine
Currants, blackberries and gooseberries are well known to Ukrainian consumers; however, these berries still belong to the niche category, which is the main advantage of growing them in small areas. This was explained by Oleg Bosiy, an expert in Ukraine's berry market, during his speech at a national agricultural conference.
"It is safe to say that there is already a culture of consumption of currants, blackberries and gooseberries in Ukraine. These berries are well known to Ukrainians; they have an attractive appearance and unique flavour characteristics. At the same time, competition from large-scale companies in this sector is quite low, and that is the main advantage of growing these fruit crops in small farms," said Mr. Bosy.
Moreover, according to the expert, blackberries, currants and gooseberries are very attractive products for the processing industry. Among the negative aspects of the business, Mr.Bosy highlighted the fact that, in spite of all the above factors, the consumption volume of blackberries, currants and gooseberries in Ukraine remains stable but low. In addition, there are still unresolved problems with the products' logistics and the marketing.
