Agreement to bring locally grown blueberries to the Middle East

An agreement between Elite Agro and Mountain Blue Orchards is poised to enable the Abu Dhabi-based company to supply locally grown blueberries to Middle Eastern markets. The blueberries which were agreed to be grown are developed and supplied by Blue Orchards PTY in Australia.

Upon signing the agreement in Berlin, Elite Agro cluster managing director Saeed Al Bahri said: “Blueberries are a super fruit, rich in antioxidants which are important for fighting many diseases. We are very proud and excited to secure the rights to grow this important and valuable crop.”

Currently blueberries are flown into the Middle East but with the global demand for blueberries growing they hope growing locally will help the industry in the Middle East. According to Euromonitor, UAE consumers ate 1,200 tonnes of blueberries in 2014. There was a 7.6% total market consumption growth between 2014 and 2015.
