Del Monte Fresh buys building in Delaware for $6.5m

Del Monte Fresh Produce has announced plans to purchase an unused building in Delaware from the Christina School District. The $6.5 million deal was reached Jan. 20, and the company is now a month into its due diligence period, Robert Silber, the district’s chief financial officer, announced last week.

The 160,000-square-foot building – located at 300 Executive Drive in the Pencader Corporate Center industrial park – was intended to be a middle school but was never used.

Dionysios Christou, vice president of marketing for Del Monte, said the Florida-based company expects to close on the sale in May and will turn the building into a production plant for sandwiches, fresh-cut fruit and protein salads, as well as use it for warehouse space and business offices.
