Late start leading to poor prices for stone fruit growers in Australia

Adrian Conti, who farms at Cobram, said he had been receiving $2/kg at the farm gate for his peaches and $2.40/kg for his nectarines.

The industry says about $3/kg is needed to cover the cost of stone fruit production.

“There’s certain lines, including peaches, that are in abundance and are on special this week,” Mr Conti said.

“Nectarine prices are some of the better ones at the moment."

In the Swan Hill district, a large percentage of Australia’s stone fruit is produced, Mick Young.

"It’s been a hard slog with peaches since Christmas, nectarines are selling a little stronger and before Christmas plums were doing well," Mr Young said.

Last year, stone fruit growers received about $1.80-$2.50/kg at the farm gate.
