Italy: European varieties not suitable for the Asian market

"The Indian market seems to be appreciating Italian apples, but it is rather difficult to manage due to logistics difficulties. Nonetheless, the quantities shipped seem to have stabilised," reports Nicola Zanotelli (in the photo below), Director of the From Italian Alps, consortium, the organisation set up by Melinda and la Trentina together with VOG and VI.P to export apples to non-EU countries.

The Gala and Red Chief varieties are the most popular. "Large volumes of the former arrive from the southern hemisphere as well, while the US are great producers of Red Chief."

"Italian apples have to compete with the US for quality, while China is the main competitor in terms of volume. Its quality is also improving and new varieties, in addition to the Fuji, are conquering new parts of the Asian market."

According to Zanotelli, Italian varieties are not entirely suitable for Asia. "Asia requires small, sweet and crunchy apples, while our production, which is mostly based on European standards, is finding it hard to succeed in a continent that is increasingly important."

As regards the Russian ban, the Director confirms that contacts are still being maintained with the Federation. "All we can do is wait for the situation to be resolved."
