Spain: Catalonia requests withdrawal of 3,000 tonnes of apples

The Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food (DARP) of the Government of Catalonia has issued a request to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (Mapama) for the withdrawal of 3,015 tonnes of apples from the market.

According to the department, the request was made after the Ministry reported that the European Commission would grant Spain an additional quota to withdraw fruit from the market, with the idea of helping tackle the impact of the low prices suffered by the sector.

At the same time, the Department has also requested an increase in this quota, since it is expected to be quickly depleted, taking into account the stocks currently in chambers.

The excess supply on the market, especially due to the entry of apples from Poland as a result of the Russian veto, translates into low prices for the producers.

This situation is also affecting the citrus sector; consequently, the Department of Agriculture has already asked the Ministry to activate, once again, the extraordinary measures for the fruit and vegetable sector to deal with the Russian veto.
