Detroit ranked unhealthiest city in America

According to WalletHub, in an American study on the health of big cities in the country, Detroit was ranked the unhealthiest. Researchers compared how America’s 150 largest cities compare on health care, food, fitness and green space.

They looked at a total of 34 variables, including how many fruits and vegetables people consume, the amount of exercise they get and the number of doctors visits.

Detroit had the lowest composite score, after Brownsville, Texas. San Francisco ranked highest, followed by Salt Lake City, Utah.

Detroit health chief Dr. Abdul El-Sayed wasn’t surprised with the results, which he blamed partly on the geography of a city where neighborhoods often lack doctors offices, healthy food stores, transportation and safe places to exercise.

“It’s really quite telling,” El-Sayed, executive director of the Detroit Department of Health & Wellness Promotion, said of the study’s results. “When you think about the causes of poor health, it has to do with the kind of environment in which people work, live and play.

“The numbers you see around access to health care, around the quality of available food options, the ability to achieve regular exercise — those are part and parcel of the particular geography of Detroit,” he added. “There’s a lot of work to be done here.”
