More pear promotions because of vegetable shortages
Two weeks ago, the pear market suddenly revived. “No one saw it coming, but it suddenly all went very quickly,” one fruit trader says. “But besides pears, there is also more demand for Elstar apples. That demand is quite a bit lower, because apples from abroad are offered for less money, but I feel very hopeful about the ULO-stored Elstar apples for the remainder of the season. The apples treated with Smartfresh in the cold stores will round off the season, and I do not rule out a price shift. Furthermore, we see a good demand for Red Prince from distant destinations. As regards Jonagold, we will have to wait and see how sales will go. But if quality remains good, it might end up all right.”
“Maturing of the pears was not too bad. The end is near for Comice and Lukassen pears, and we will be left with Conference. Those sales continue to go well, both for the sorted and the unsorted product. All sizes are between 70 and 80 cent,” the fruit trader continues. “The price for Elstar (size 65/75) of the second picking is between 40 and 45 cent, and the ones that have coloured well are selling for 50 cent. The cold weather in Southern Europe has also had much influence on fruit sales. For example, because of the vegetable shortages, we had many additional promotions for our pears. However, this has also had its consequences. Prices of Boskoop are now increasing, but a well-known supermarket chain has taken them out of their assortment.”
