Good pear season for Origine Group

The commercialisation of pears is going well and Origine Group operators are optimistic about the second half of the season.

Managing Director Alberto Garbuglia reports that "we have been doing well since the summer pear period. We have now finished with William pears and we can say we are satisfied. The domestic market absorbs around 70% of the total production and is always active."

Origine Group products are sold under the PeraItalia brand to different retailers. The appealing packaging and high-quality of the fruit meant demand was quite lively straight away. At the end of the campaign, Origine Group should have sold around 60 thousand tons of produce.

Data concerning 2016 was positive. Quality is excellent and so is shelf-life, de-stocking is regular and organoleptic qualities are good too. Overseas, both in South Africa and Argentina, quality does not seem to be so good and grades are small.

"Now we are selling Abate pears and everything is going well, in line with expectations. We have sold much more produce with respect to January 2016."

"Of course, we could improve the way we do things if we worked as a system. Sometimes, when operators have some excess produce, they sell it to France at prices below the average to sell quickly. But everyone would benefit from preliminary agreements. For example, PGI pears could achieve better prices, especially abroad."
