First harvest of QTee in South Africa not yet commercial

This year the red blushed QTee will be harvested in South Africa for the first time. "They are hanging very nicely. It isn't commercial volumes yet, they aren't expected until next year," says Achiel Ryckaert of Fresh Fruit Services. "The harvest for 2018 is estimated at 300 tonnes and this is expected to rise quickly in the coming years."

Longer season

At the moment there are already more than 100 hectares of QTee in South Africa. Every year around 65 hectares is planted. Achiel indicates he is satisfied with the production. "The harvest on the slightly older test trees confirms what we already knew. QTee does well in the South African climate. They are early, good in colour, size and flavour. The storage tests undertaken in the last season show a lot of potential. It is a hopeful combination and we can also make the season longer. QTee from the Northern Hemisphere can be followed by QTee from the Southern Hemisphere in the coming years."

The Belgian season went very positively. "These pears were sold to satisfied customers in 12 countries in November. We consciously spread the deliveries to research the opportunities. The results were positive: both in supermarkets such as Waitrose in the UK, ICA in Sweden and Edeka and Aldi in Germany. Various containers were also sent to the Middle and Far East with positive and hopeful results. In this way we gain experience on these markets and can estimate how large the market for QTee can become." He concludes: "We enjoy a slow, constant growth with, as its goal, satisfied people on all sides of the chain: producer, trade, retail and consumer."

QTee is present at Fruit Logistica from 8-10 February. Hall 6.2/Stand B03.
