The Chilean industry participated for the second consecutive year at the International Green Week Fair, which is held from January 20 to the 29 in Berlin, Germany, to promote the availability and versatile use of Chilean blueberries.
"This time, even though we are participating with various Chilean seasonal fruits, we wanted to enhance our fresh blueberries. This fair is aimed at the end consumer, so it is a very good platform to let them know about our product's availability, quality, safety, health benefits, and the different ways it can be used in culinary preparations especially made by our chef Ricardo Gonzalez, who helped the industry win an international competition in China," stated Charif Christian Carvajal, ASOEX Marketing Director for Asia and Europe.
According to Carvajal, blueberry consumption in Germany has steadily increased over the last 5 years, which makes it a market with enormous growth potential. This market's per capita consumption of blueberries is 1 kilo per year.
Diego Torres, the commercial director of ProChile in Berlin said: "Germany is a major consumer of blueberries and we see a huge potential to increase consumption and strengthen Chile's position as the leading exporter of this product in the southern hemisphere."
The Blueberry Committee, ProChile, and the Fruit Exporters Association of Chile AG (ASOEX) organized Chile’s participation at the fair.
"More than 410,000 visitors attend this fair and 85,000 of them are trade visitors. We have arranged a stand to show our fresh fruit export offer. We have planned tastings, delivering material, such as recipes and other stuff. In addition, our chef will conduct a cooking show where he will prepare innovative recipes so that the visitors can learn other ways of consuming Chilean blueberries and other fruits, such as the avocado," Carvajal said.
Actions in Europe
According to Andres Armstrong, executive director of ASOEX's Blueberry Committee, Chile's blueberry industry is conducting various promotional activities in Europe, including programs in different markets, such as the UK, Scandinavia, Italy, France, and Spain.
Armstrong said that these promotions would help boost blueberry consumption, especially in the context of a campaign with higher and more concentrated volumes due to an early start of the harvest and shipments.
On January 28, as part of the celebration of the Pancake Day in the UK, the domestic industry will participate in the Seasonal Berry Campaign, which is led by UK producers and distributors of blueberry. In addition to other actions at point of sale.
