Spain: The EU's largest melon supplier

In the 2015/2016 marketing year (01/09/2015-31/08/2016), Spain has been the largest supplier of melons to the Member States of the European Union (EU), accounting for 4 out of every 10 melons purchased, according to data processed by Hortoinfo and supplied by the Euroestacom statistical service (ICEX-Eurostat).

The total volume of melons bought by the EU last season has amounted to 1,727.23 million kilos, worth 1,484.7 million Euro. Both have been record figures.

The EU has also paid the highest price ever for each kilo of melons, reaching an average price of 0.738 Euro per kilo.

Of the EU's five largest suppliers, the country that has sold the most expensive melons has been Morocco, with an average price of 1.064 Euro per kilo.

Spain has supplied European consumers with a total of 692.33 million kilos of melons (40.08% of the total) worth 510.87 million Euro, achieving an average price of 0.738 Euro per kilo. Spain's sales to the EU have been greater than those of Brazil, the Netherlands, Costa Rica and Morocco combined.

The second place has been for Brazil, which sold 281.55 million kilos of melons to the EU worth 208.23 million Euro, with an average price of 0.740 Euro per kilo.

In third place is the Netherlands, which has sold 197.27 million kilos of melons in the EU countries worth 198.42 million Euro. The average price that the Netherlands has received has stood at 1.006 Euro per kilo.

In fourth position is Costa Rica, with a volume of 108.32 million kilos, 96.64 million Euro and an average price of 0.892 Euro per kilo.

Morocco ranks fifth, having sold 87.95 million kilos in the EU worth 93.59 million Euro, receiving an average price of 1.064 Euro per kilo.
