Spain: Andalusian strawberry prices triple
The price of the Andalusian strawberries, 94% of which are cultivated in the province of Huelva, has almost tripled over the last year mainly because of the slowdown in production due to the low temperatures of the last few weeks.
According to the latest report of the Price Observatory of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development, as a result of the climate there still are some traders who are just beginning to sell their berries. This has led to a low supply and better prices than in the previous season, which began with exceptionally high volumes and very low prices.
The average price received by producers in the first weeks of January stood at 2.8 euro/kilo, while last year they received 1.2 euro. The moderate production is also favoring the fruit's quality.
When compared to the previous campaign, the area devoted to strawberry crops in Huelva has dropped by nearly 8 percent.
