After the rain and the cold in Spain, it is not easy to meet demand for outdoor vegetables, according to Ad van der Staaij of Savasun from Vilanova d’Escornalbou, Tarragona. “And we are one of the companies that should not complain. In Murcia and Malaga, a large part of the production was lost. Here in Tarragona we can continue working, but that is about it.”
Just as last year, Savasun SA’s – part of the Staay Food Group – outdoor area amounts to about 1,200 hectares. The company cultivates, among other things, cauliflower, spinach, (curled) endive, lollo rosso, lollo bionda, oak leaf lettuce (green and red), fennel, kale, celeriac (for cutting plants), parsley (curled and leaf), beetroots, romanesco, green cauliflower, scallion, leek, blanched celery (white and green), broad bean, green peas, potatoes and oxheart cabbage in Tarragona.
“Many products are scarce, nothing is growing properly. For example, endive and lollo rosso were much heavier per piece last year. Demand is good. I Receive requests from people who I did not even know were still alive,” Ad laughs. “We cannot complain about prices, but you do have to have product to sell. I expect it will definitely not be easy to fulfil all of our obligations until the end of February.”
