Wet season brings big yields of Kukadu plums in Western Australia

A wet season is leading to big yields for indigenous communities who are harvesting gubinge in Western Australia. The fruit is known as the Kakadu plum and has the highest Vitamic C contant of any fruit.

Lenny O'Meara from Kimberley Wild Gubinge said after big rains in December, there was an abundance of quality fruit on the Dampier Peninsula, north of Broome.

"The season up here is very good this year because of the rain," he told ABC Rural. "So it's really good picking this year and the fruit are nice and fat."

Lenny O'Meara sees the fruit as a big opportunity to help the well-being of the indigenous people.

"For Indigenous people, gubinge is a good source of income and if its managed right it can be a big and profitable business," he said.

"It's just a matter of Indigenous people getting the support and building an industry."
