New grape varieties in Australia help ease difficult year

Western Australia's Carnarvon table grape growers are now harvesting their first yields of new varieties. Sweet Sapphire is one of these and is a long black grape, about the size of your thumb.

Grower Mark Bumback said the new variety had good yields and was well accepted on the market.

"We picked 1,700 boxes off 1,200 vines. We were very happy with that," Mr Bumback said and went on to discuss the expansion and export demand.

"We've planted another three hectares of it already and there are plans to plant more. The guy's over east last year made an absolute fortune on it. We've always wanted something that was in demand export-wise and we've now got it."

Other new varieties picked by the Bumback family this year included the sweet, red grape called Candy Hearts, and the white Cotton Candy.

While new varieties helped, Bumback reported that it had been a difficult year overall for growers.

"We had lots of issues with the whites this year, but I can't really pinpoint it" he said.

"It was a late season for starters. It was cold for so long during flowering and fruit set.

Despite the challenges, Mr Bumback said it has been exciting to see the new varieties come to fruition.
